Stanford’s inaugural conference, “Scaling Sustainability Innovation,” held in May 2024, brought together diverse perspectives to identify challenges in scaling and propose solutions to address them. Featuring 75 speakers and nearly 400 attendees, the event was organized in partnership with the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, with the collaboration of the Stanford Ecopreneurship, the Sustainability Conference Series, the Sustainability Accelerator, and the Precourt Institute for Energy. Drawing on Stanford’s expertise in scaling innovation and its unique position within the Silicon Valley ecosystem, entrepreneurs, investors, industry leaders, academics, and policy experts shared their insights and advanced frameworks for scaling sustainability innovation.

The content of this paper is drawn from presentations and discussions at the event, as processed and interpreted by the authors to distill concrete takeaways. While this paper highlights what the authors believe to be among the critical learnings, the depth of insights offered at the conference extends far beyond what can be captured here. For a more comprehensive perspective, readers are encouraged to access the full conference recordings available here.

Whitepaper Highlights

“The sustainability transition is […] estimated to require $100 trillion to $300 trillion in investment over the next few decades to foster new industries and rewire incumbent economies and infrastructure.”

“A significant funding challenge emerges during the first-of-a-kind (FOAK) stage where 1) the need for “bigger dollars” often surpasses the capacity of the modern venture capital investment model and 2) the risk/return profiles are often difficult to accept when large amounts of capital go into building physical assets.”

“The absence of policy support can be a significant inhibitor to scaling sustainability innovation. In the words of energy transition champion Kate Gordon, in the world of climate ‘there is nothing that is not policy.'”

“To maintain that mission focus, it is important to tell a story that pulls people along on the journey, fostering deeper engagement and investment in the company and its longer-term goals.”
